Insights from the Tale of the Gayatri
During my last service, the tale of how the Gayatri came into existence was retold as given to earth through the Hindu Rig Veda, the oldest of the sacred books of India. The story is about a battle; a battle between a warrior king Vishwamitra and his guru, Brahma Rishi Vasishtha. The king was accountable for the material well-being of the land and the Rishi the kingdom’s spiritual well-being. All was harmonious until the king’s ego got the better of him. The king suffered through the ego’s fire of anger, desire, attachment and the limitation of dwelling on, and the acquiring of, things. That was until, through a thousand years of meditation, he saw the light. Such is the internal battle between our own inner guru as represented by Vasishtha - known as ‘The man through whom God speaks’ and our own ego, the keeper of our earthly being, Vishwamitra - known as ‘The Friend of the Universe.’ We are both sides in this battle. We’ll explore this conundrum and meditate on the radiance of the inner light through the Gayatri mantra. Together may we find a semblance of harmony - in less than 1,000 years!
